Prostate Cancer treatment
Description
Prostate cancer is cancer of the prostate gland, found only in men. The prostate gland is the size of a walnut, and located just below the bladder and in front of rectum. The initiation of the prostate cancer starts from the prostate gland cells, with minute changes in the size and shape. These changes are known as PIN (prostatic intraepithelial neoplasia). A prostate biopsy that shows high-grade
PIN can imply that there is a greater likelihood that there are cancer cells in the prostate.

Causes
The causes of prostate cancer are still unknown, however there are some factors contributing to the initiation and growth of the cancer. These factors include: 1) Testosterone level: This is the male hormone, and while it doesn't cause cancer, it has been shown to feed prostate cancer. 2) Age: Men over 50 are at a risk of having prostate caner. Aging produces many biochemical reactions that contri
bute to abnormal cell growth. 3) Heredity: If a man's father or older sibling has prostate cancer, then he is at higher risk of developing the condition. 4) Diet: A diet high in animal fat may increase a man's risk for developing prostate cancer, while a diet high in fruits and vegetables (especially tomato-based products) may decrease the risk.

Prevention
Researchers are still trying to understand the causes of prostate cancer and determine which prevention strategies are most effective. The following guidelines may help lower your risk of prostate cancer: 1) Drink alcohol in moderation- heavy drinking increases the risk of aggressive prostate cancer. 2) Eat a variety of fruits and vegetables- cruciferous foods such as broccoli, kale and cabbage mi
ght protect against prostate cancer. 3) Limit saturated fats (such as animal fats found in red meat). These may pose the largest risk in causing prostate cancer.

Common Symptoms
Prostate cancer symptoms do not usually appear until the disease has advanced. However, there are some symptoms of prostate cancer related to urination. As prostate cancer advances, the prostate enlarges and constricts the urethra. This results in various difficulties with urination including burning or pain during urination, weak urine stream, inability to urinate, frequent urination, or blood in
urine.

Rare Symptoms
Non-specific symptoms which might accompany urinary symptoms include: pelvic pain, weight loss, back and/or hip pain, blood in semen, impotence, and loss of bladder control.
Traditional Treatment
- Cryosurgery, in which the cells are frozen with cold metal probes, is used for prostate cancer that has not spread
- Radical prostatectomy is most often used when the cancer has not spread outside of the gland. In this operation, the surgeon removes the whole prostate gland plus some of the tissue around it, including the seminal vesicles.
- Chemotherapy is used when the prostate cancer has spr
ead outside of the prostate gland and no other treatment is working.
- External beam therapy (EBT) delivers a beam of high-energy x-rays to the location of the tumor. These x-rays can destroy the cancer cells and careful treatment planning allows the surrounding normal tissues to be spared.
- Photodynamic therapy (PDT) is a treatment which uses photosensitizing agents, along with light, to kill cancer cells. The drugs may travel throughout the body, but the treatment only works at the area exposed to light and this is why PDT can't be used to treat cancers that have spread to many places.
- Transurethral Resection of the Prostate (TURP) is the removal of tissue from the prostate by inserting an instrument through the urethra in the penis and guiding it up into the prostate to cut some of the tissue that surrounds the urethra. TURP is most often recommended for men with noncancerous enlargement of the prostate. The side effects of TURP are often less severe than radical prostatectomy.
- Three-dimensional Conformal Radiation Therapy (3D-CRT) uses high-tech computers to identify the location of the cancer inside the prostate gland.
- Conformal Proton Beam Radiation Therapy is similar to three-dimensional conformal radiation therapy, except that it uses protons to produce the radiation beam. This proton beam can be aimed at cancerous tissue to destroy cells.
- Prostate Brachytherapy is also called prostate seed implant. Small seeds are inserted into the cancer during a surgical procedure after the patient has been given a local or general anesthetic, and they don't cause any pain or discomfort. Brachytherapy can be used by itself or in combination with external radiation therapy.
- Orchiectomy is the surgical removal of testicles, which produces 95% of the body's testosterone.
- Antiandrogen Therapy is a type of hormone therapy used in prostate cancer that includes administration of drugs called antiandrogens, which blocks the action of male hormones.

Alternative Treatment
Estrogen therapy is a form of hormone therapy that involves administering a female hormone such as estrogen. Female hormones reduce the production of testosterone by the testicles. The most commonly used estrogen in prostate cancer is diethylstilbestrol, or DES. Hormone therapy with estrogen has limited use and is generally considered only for patients who cannot have surgery or to relieve pain in
patients with prostate cancer that is progressing.
There are few alternative prostate cancer treatments which help an individual to cope with the feelings and emotions that may come with the illness. These include: art or music therapy, relaxation techniques, spirituality, dance or movement therapy, and exercise.

Research and Development
Research has suggested that having a vasectomy (a procedure in which the tubes that transport sperm are cut and tied, which in turn makes him sterile) might increase a man's risk for prostate cancer. However, there is debate about this, as there are many studies that do not support this finding. Additionally, research has found that an enlarged prostate (benign prostatic hyperplasia) does not nece
ssary lead to or predict prostate cancer. However, men with BPH should be extra vigilant for prostate cancer since enlargement may be a symptom of prostate cancer.
