Epilepsy, Seizure & Spasm treatment
Description
Epilepsy affects about three million people in the United States. It is a brain disorder caused by abnormal electrical activity in the brain. This uncontrollable storm of electrical impulses result is what is known as a seizure. In order to diagnose a person with Epilepsy, they must have suffered from at least two seizures. Although many types of seizures are explainable, many of them have no know
n cause.

Causes
Epilepsy can be caused by factors such as chemical imbalances, genetic malformation, and injuries in the brain. Although these are common causes of Epilepsy, most cases of Epilepsy occur without known cause.
Prevention
There is no way to prevent Epilepsy. However head injuries should be avoided to reduce the chance of developing Epilepsy.
Common Symptoms
Symptoms of Epilepsy include reoccurring seizures. These seizures can be partial or generalized. Other symptoms include loss of consciousness, convulsions (in which the person suffers from uncontrollable jerking movements of the muscle), and emotional disturbances.
Rare Symptoms
Psychotic symptoms are rare in Epilepsy.
Traditional Treatment
Common treatments for Epilepsy include anti-epileptic drugs such as Gabitril, vagus nerve stimulation, and surgery.
Alternative Treatment
One alternative treatment for Epilepsy is a ketogenic diet, where a state of starvation in the body is preserved in order to produce Ketones. Other treatments include homeopathy, herbal treatments, acupuncture, and methods of relaxation such as Biofeedback.

Research and Development
There are potential treatments and ongoing research in areas such as cortical stimulation mapping. Development of transmitters implanted in the brain to detect signs of Epileptic seizures before they happen are also being researched and tested. New gamma-Aminobutyric acid (GABA) enhancers are also being examined as potential in the treatment of Epilepsy.
