Arrhythmia (Irregular Heartbeat)
Description
In a sentence arrhythmia refers to abnormal heart rhythm. To elaborate, an arrhythmic condition could result in various possibilities like too rapid, slow, or irregular heartbeats. An arrhythmia that involves rapid heartbeat with more than 100 heartbeats per minute is referred to as tachycardia and an arrhythmia with less than 60 heartbeats per minute is referred to as bradycardia. Arrhythmias wit
h irregular heartbeats are referred to as fibrillations which are two kinds, atrial and ventricular fibrillation. In addition to the above, if a single heartbeat occurs sooner than regular it is referred to as a premature contraction.

Causes
Contractions of the heart are brought about by electrical impulses and these impulses to follow a precise format for it to function efficiently. Disruptions in these electrical impulses lead to arrhythmia. A healthy and fit person will record a resting heart rate of less than 60 beats per minute. Some of the common causes that cause arrhythmias are as mentioned below: Alcohol abuse
• Diabetes
• Drug abuse
• Excessive coffee consumption
• Heart disease
• Hypertension (elevated blood pressure)
• Hyperthyroidism (an overactive thyroid gland)
• Mental stress
• Scarring of the heart; often the result of a heart attack
• Smoking
• Some dietary supplements
• Some herbal treatments
• Some medications
Healthy and fit people seldom suffer from chronic arrhythmia unless there are external triggers like external triggers like drug abuse or an electric shock.

Common Symptoms
While some people do not experience any symptoms the rest might notice various symptoms depending upon the type of arrhythmia they are suffering from. Certain people are completely unaware of their arrhythmia condition until detected by a physician during a routine physical examination. Therefore, there are chances of people with serious arrhythmic conditions going undetected because of a total la
ck or absence of any signs and symptoms. Some common symptoms associated with tachycardia form of arrhythmia include breathlessness; dizziness; flutters in the chest region; giddiness; acute weakness. Common symptoms associated with bradycardia include angina or severe chest pain; lack of concentration or inability to focus; confusion; inability to exercise well; dizziness; weakness; and palpitations. Symptoms of another form of arrhythmia which is called atrial fibrillation include angina or chest pain; breathlessness; contusion; palpitations; and malaise or tiredness.

Traditional Treatment
Conventional treatment modalities include surgery; insertion and placement of medical devices; nonsurgical procedures; and pharmacological treatment including medications. Surgical interventions include open-heart maze procedure; minimally invasive surgery. Medical devices include placement of pacemakers and internal cardioverter defibrillator or ICD. Nonsurgical intervention includes catheter rad
iofrequency ablation; cardioversion sometimes accompanied with drugs; and electrical cardioversion. Pharmacological treatment includes administering antiarrhthymic medications like Amiodarone (Cordarone, Pacerone)
