Social Anxiety Disorder treatment

Description
Social Anxiety Disorder, otherwise known as social phobia, is characterized by fear of being in social situations. This could include situations such as meeting new people, writing on a blackboard, going to parties, using public restrooms or public speaking, among many others.
Causes
People with social anxiety disorder try to avoid situations where they will be watched or judged by other people. This disorder can begin when they are a child, due to overprotective parents or lack of involvement in social activities and opportunities.
Prevention
Taking measures in improving self esteem and training in social skills, avoiding stimulants such as caffeine, chocolate, and nicotine, relieving stress, and adopting a healthy lifestyle pattern.
Common Symptoms
Heart palpitations, tremors, sweating, shaking, chills, hot flashes, nausea, constant fear of being watched or judged for things they are doing, blushing, difficulty talking.
Rare Symptoms
Bipolar mania.
Traditional Treatment
Cognitive behavioral treatment, beta blockers, SSRI's, MAOI's, benzodiazepenes, exposure therapy, cognitive restructuring.
Alternative Treatment
Relaxation and deep breathing techniques, meditation, herbal and homeopathic remedies, and psychotherapy. A holistic approach can include a balanced diet, exercise, cognitive behavioral therapy and self help, lemon balm, lavender, passion flower, kava kava.
