New research has found that people with darker skin colors may have a higher chance of becoming addicted to nicotine. Melanin, the pigment that determine skin color, binds tightly to nicotine - this usually happens in the melanin-containing organs. However in darker skin tones, the melanin binds more widely throughout the body, creating a higher dependence. Darker skin tones, while some are genetic, can be enhanced by long periods in the sun, or in tanning beds.

New research suggests that bacteria in tobacco can lead to infection - even just by handling the tobacco products. The researcher was able to isolate and grow some strains of bacteria in a petri dish, and suspects that there are up to a thousand bacterial species in tobacco products. The team found over a hundred bacterial matches in their research, including: "Campylobacter, which can cause food poisoning and Guillain-Barre Syndrome; Clostridium, which causes food poisoning and pneumonias; Corynebacterium, also associated with pneumonias and other diseases; E. coli; Klebsiella, Pseudomonas aeruginosa and Stenotrophomonas maltophilia, all of which are associated not only with pneumonia but also with urinary tract infections; and a number of Staphylococcus species that underlie the most common and serious hospital-associated infections."

Eat breakfast ! Studies have shown that people who eat breakfast are leaner than those who don't, because they have the stamina to exercise more regularly and make more health-conscious food choices. Eating a breakfast cereal with at least 6 grams of fiber per serving and less than 10 grams of sugar per serving can help you reduce the risk of heart disease, stroke, diabetes, intestinal polyps, and colon cancer. Low fat milk, berries, bananas, apple slices, and/or nuts can make your breakfast even healthier and yummier.

Do you have terrible menstrual cramps and uncomfortable periods? Try the following:
exercise vigorously - jump rope recommended - especially during first 2 days
Drink tons of water
Drink Red Raspberry leaf tea during the week before
Stop eating sugar
Take an ibuprofen/advil during the first 2 days (2 in the morning 2 in the evening)
acupuncture - ask for recommended herbs also
take a hot bath / place a hot water bottle on your abdomen
Eat lots of spinach (for iron) and fresh fruits/vegetables
Stop eating salt
Have orgasms - they produce a hormone that speed everything up
Take birth control pills

The American Heart Association has a prescription for a long life - and it doesn't come in a pill bottle. It's called the "Simple 7." According to the AMA, if you want to live free of heart trouble you need to:
Exercise regularly
Eat well, including plenty of fruit, veggies and whole grains in your diet
Keep blood pressure in check
Stay away from cigarettes
Control blood sugar
Achieve and maintain your ideal weight
Keep your total cholesterol at under 200

You might be able to avoid the H1N1 virus, regular flu and the common cold this winter by exercising every day.
Exercise gives your immune system a boost, says Dr. David Nieman, director of Appalachian State University's Human Performance Lab in North Carolina. According to Dr. Neiman, two kinds of immune cells circulate more freely in the blood when you excercise, neutralizing pathogens. The effect only lasts for a few hours, but the benefits are cumulative, adding up to a generally stronger immune system.
People who walked "briskly" for 45 minutes a day, at least five daysa week for 12 to 15 weeks, reduced their sick days by 25 to 50 percent compared to couch potato controls in his study.

I completely agree. However, be careful to not overdo it - regular exercise helps boost the immune system, but overexercising can actually weaken your system. Happy trails!

If you use a steroid inhaler like Advair for asthma or COPD, rinse, gargle and SPIT immediately after inhaling. Not rinsing heightens the risk of thrush, but swallowing the stuff puts steroids where they don't need to be. I used to follow my morning puff with a swig of coffee until my doctor put me straight!
If you do get thrush (candida) a course of probiotics can help, as can eliminating sugar from your diet. If a plain water rinse doesn't work, try using mouthwash--either a commercial brand, or try putting a few drops of tea tree oil in the water, or use one part cider vinegar to two parts water.

If you have trouble getting cool in summer or if you sweat a lot during exercise, try using sandalwood oil as a splash on cologne. Sandalwood oil has cooling properties and is used in many Asian countries to cool the body when no air conditioning is available. It smells great and works as a natural coolant on the skin. It’s also great for acne, eczema and other skin problems that can be caused by sensitivity to heat.
Regrettably, due to over cultivation in India, it's very difficult to find good quality sandalwood oil, unless you happen to visit the Mysore Provence in India or Dubai- where they sell all sorts of essential oils and fragrances.. Still, even diluted versions that can be found in the USA work pretty well to keep you cool in summer months. Try shops that sell incense or Indian goods, and if possible purchase the Mysore brand which regulated by the Indian Government and is the most pure oil available in most cases.
