About Kava
Kava is an ancient crop from the Western pacific. The word kava is used to refer both to the plant and to the beverage produced from its roots. In modern countries, kava is produced from root powder. Kava powder, water, and often lecithin are combined to create a tea. Kavalactones, the active ingredient in kava, are extracted by pharmaceutical and supplement companies to produce kava pills. Kava is used to relieve throat pain and produce a numbing effect on the throat and tongue. In the West, kava is marketed to treat stress, anxiety, and insomnia. It is often associated with a feeling of relaxation without loss of clarity, and has been compared to the effects of alcohol.
