I am a 58 year old male who has been on Hydrea for over 10 years now for polycythemia vera. I guess it has been doing it's job as the treatment (along with monthly phlebotomies) has been keeping me alive. The worst side effect of the drug is the muscle fatigue that I experience. Over the years it has gotten progressively worse to the point where I have had to cut back on my work load (finish carpenter) because I cannot make it through a full day anymore. Second worse side effect are occasional mouth sores. They are more of a nuisance than anything as they come and go irregularly.

About Hydroxyurea
Hydroxyurea or hydroxycarbamide (the latter being the recommended International Non-Proprietary Name), (brand names include Hydrea) is an antineoplastic drug used in hematological malignancies. It is also used as an antiretroviral agent (e.g., against HIV). Its mechanism of action is believed to be based on its inhibition of the enzyme ribonucleotide reductase by scavenging tyrosyl free radicals as they are involved in the reduction NDPs.
