Description
Neuralgia is characterized by a chronic sensation of pain burning or stabbing) that follows the path of a specific nerve, typically as a result of degenerative nerve damage. Causes
Although triggers for neuralgia are location-specific and pain can be triggered by any number of external stimuli (even a cool breeze can cause intense pain in someone suffering from occipital neuralgia), nerve damage is often at the root of neuralgia symptoms. Rare Symptoms
Rare symptoms for neuralgia include muscle spasms, and a slowed or even stopped heartbeat. Also, there can sometimes be localized numbness of the skin where painful attacks occur.
Traditional Treatment
Anticonvulsants, antidepressants, anti-spasticity drugs, painkillers, lidocaine skin patches, electrical nerve stimulation. Surgical options: microvascular decompression, balloon compression, glycerol injection, severing the nerve, radiation.
Alternative Treatment
Hypnosis, electric nerve stimulation, biofeedback, or a diet high in protein, fats, and carbohydrates. Also, acupuncture, B-complex vitamins, Zanthoxylum clava herculisis (Toothache Tree), or Matricaria recutita (German Chamomile).
