Alzheimer's treatment

Description
Alzheimer's disease is the most common form of dementia. It is an incurable, degenerative, and terminal disease that affects people usually above 65 years of age. Once someone has been diagnosed with Alzheimer's disease, the mean life expectancy is seven years. Causes
The causes of the disease are not completely understood, and there are several hypotheses. One is that the disease is caused by reduced synthesis of the neurotransmitter acetylcholine. Another is that the condition is caused by amyloid beta (Aβ) deposits. Yet another is that aging causes loss of myelin, which is the material that insulates the neuron and facilitates speedy neural transmissions.
Prevention
Research is still pending concerning many of the proposed preventative methods, but risk factors include high cholesterol, high blood pressure, diabetes, and cigarette smoking. Common Symptoms
The disease comes on in 4 stages: pre-dementia, early dementia, moderate dementia, and advanced dementia. Symptoms of pre-dementia are often mistaken for aging, and include memory loss and mild cognitive difficulties. Early dementia is classified with worsening of symptoms and definitive diagnosis of Alzheimer's disease. Symptoms may include decline in language abilities. Moderate dementia results View more...
Rare Symptoms
Delusional symptoms, urinary incontinence.
Traditional Treatment
There is no cure for Alzheimer's disease, so the treatment options are palliative. There are currently four pharmaceutical drugs used in Alzheimer's disease treatment: three acetylcholinesterase inhibitors and one NMDA receptor antagonist.
Alternative Treatment
Psychosocial interventions are used to help the mood and cognitive abilities of the affected individual. The following supplements have also been used for Alzheimer's disease: Coenzyme Q10, Coral calcium, Ginkgo biloba, Huperzine A, Omega-3 fatty acids, Phosphatidylserine.
