The generic name of Amaryl is glimepiride and Brand Name is Amaryl.
The active ingredient of Amaryl is glimepiride and inactive ingredients of Amaryl are lactose (hydrous), sodium starch glycolate, povidone, microcrystalline cellulose, and magnesium stearate.
Amaryl is mainly used for treating type 2 diabetes in people who cannot lower blood sugar through lifestyle changes like weight loss, diet, and exercise. Amaryl functions by increasing the production of insulin in the pancreas.

Amaryl is mainly used for treating type 2 diabetes in people who cannot lower blood sugar through lifestyle changes like weight loss, diet, and exercise. Amaryl functions by increasing the production of insulin in the pancreas. Amaryl also helps to lower blood sugar by improving insulin resistance.

Off Label Uses:

None noted currently.

Side Effects:
Hypoglycemia;
Allergic skin reactions;
Leucopenia;
Thrombocytopenia;
Dypsnea;
Hemolytic anemia;
Vomiting;
Diarrhea;
Hyponatremia and impaired liver functions.

Cautions / Warnings:

Not recommended for following conditions:
Who are allergic to any ingredient in Amaryl;
Who have certain severe problems associated with diabetes (eg, diabetic coma, diabetic ketoacidosis);
Who have moderate to severe burns, or very high blood acid levels (acidosis);
who are taking bosentan;
Who are pregnant, planning to become pregnant, or are breast-feeding;
Who have a history of stroke or liver, kidney, thyroid, heart, or blood vessel problems.

Drug Interactions:
Beta blockers, such as metoprolol (Lopressor, Toprol XL), atenolol (Tenormin), propranolol (Inderal, Inderal LA, InnoPran XL), labetalol (Trandate), and carvedilol (Coreg, Coreg CR);
Some antifungals like fluconazole (Diflucan), ketoconazole (Nizoral) and miconazole;
Decongestants like phenylephrine or Sudafed PE or pseudoephedrine or Sudafed;
Some seizure medications like carbamazepine (Carbatrol, Epitol, Equetro, Tegretol), fosphenytoin (Cerebyx), phenobarbital (Luminal) and phenytoin (Dilantin, Phenytek);
Chloramphenicol (Chloromycetin);
Clarithromycin (Biaxin);
Corticosteroids, such as:
Betamethasone;
Cortisone;
Dexamethasone;
Fludrocortisone;
Hydrocortisone;
Methylprednisolone;
Prednisolone;
Prednisone;
Triamcinolone.
