Kiss a toad to beat cancer?
Traditional Chinese medicine (TCM) practitioners have used huachansu to treat liver, lung, colon and pancreatic cancers for many years. Now Western doctors are catching up with dried toad venom’s anti-cancer properties.
A 15-patient trial conducted by researchers from the famed MD Anderson Cancer Center in conjunction with Fudan University Cancer Hospital in Shanghai found that doses of the venom at up to eight times higher than the traditional dosage weren’t toxic. And the venom was effective for stabilizing late-stage cancers for an average of six months, even reducing tumors by up to 20 percent.
The small trial, primarily focusing on safety, was promising enough for researchers to want to know more. Larger trials comparing toad venom mixed with gemcitabine to gemci
