Randy Jackson
Grammy Award-winning producer "Randy" Jackson (1956—) is well known as a judge on American Idol. In 2001 he was diagnosed with type 2 diabetes. Weighing 355 pounds he was in "the worst shape of his life", he said, and was feeling extremely tired, thirsty, and feverish. Believing that he just had a cold, he delayed going to the doctor until he clearly couldn't put it off any longer.
He ended up in the emergency room with a blood sugar level of 500 (normal is 70-150)and an unequivocal diagnosis of Type 2 diabetes. After struggling to lose weight he had gastric bypass surgery in 2003 and lost 125 lbs, which helped reverse the diabetes to a great extent. He exercises regularly and says he's learned to love the treadmill—when all else fails, he can at least put in 45 minutes on that.
He's drastically changed his eating habits, setting aside his old habits of emotional eating and his love of Louisiana-style desserts in favor of healthy versions of favorites like red beans and rice.
Nowadays Jackson checks his blood sugar every day and occasionally has to take medication. Losing weight and exercising regularly, however, has made a huge difference in his diabetes management. Hoping to help other people with similar problems he recently wrote 'Body and Soul,' part-memoir, part diet and health book.
