Common Uses:

This medication is used to prevent blood clots after a recent heart attack or stroke, and in people with certain disorders of the heart or blood vessels.

Off Label Uses:

None noted currently.

Side Effects:
Decreases in certain cells involved with the immune system;
Serious skin or allergic reactions;
Decreases in platelets;
Stomach bleeding or ulcers;
Constipation;
Urinary tract infection (UTI);
Fatigue;
High blood pressure (hypertension);
Joint pain;
Depression;
Anemia;
Difficulty breathing;
Thrombotic thrombocytopenic purpura.

Cautions / Warnings:

Not advisable in people who are allergic to clopidogrel;
Not advisable in people who have any active bleeding such as a stomach ulcer or bleeding in the brain;
Not advisable in people who have a bleeding or blood clotting disorder, such as hemophilia;
Not advisable in people who have a history of stroke, including TIA ("mini-stroke");
Not advisable in people who have liver disease or kidney disease.

Drug Interactions:
Phenytoin (Dilantin);
Tamoxifen (Nolvadex);
Tolbutamide (Orinase);
Torsemide (Demadex);
Fluvastatin (Lescol);
A blood thinner such as warfarin (Coumadin), heparin, dalteparin (Fragmin), enoxaparin (Lovenox), or tinzaparin (Innohep);
Other medication used to prevent blood clots, such as alteplase (Activase), Dipyridamole (Persantine), ticlopidine (Ticlid), and urokinase (Abbokinase).

About Plavix

The generic name of this medication is clopidogrel and Brand Name is Plavix. Plavix is manufactured by Bristol-Myers Squibb and Sanofi Aventis. The active ingredient clopidogrel hydrogen sulphate of Plavix functions as an antiplatelet and stops blood cells called platelets from clumping together and forming blood clots. Each Plavix tablet contains hydrogenated castor oil, hydroxypropylcellulose, mannitol, microcrystalline cellulose and polyethylene glycol 6000 as inactive ingredients. Mainly used in to prevent blood clots after a recent heart attack or stroke, and in people with certain disorders of the heart or blood vessels.
