Common Uses:

Some of the common uses of Glucophage XR include in reducing blood sugar levels by decreasing hepatic glucose production and decrease the intestinal absorption of glucose. It is used as an adjuvant therapy or treatment to food, diet, and lifestyle changes in an attempt to improve glycemic control in type 2 diabetes mellitus.

Off Label Uses:

Some of the off label uses of Glucophage XR include: Weight reduction and also where it might retard the action of the drug prednisone.

Side Effects:
Some of the common side effects while taking Glucophage XR include: abdominal discomfort, gas, indigestion, nausea, vomiting, weakness, erectile dysfunction, diarrhea, taste disturbance, and heartburn.

Cautions / Warnings:

Cautions and warnings that need to be noted while taking Glucophage XR include the following: lactic acidosis which is a rare but serious complication and can occur during treatment with Glucophage XR. Some patients may develop renal problems, and thus needs to undergo kidney function test annually, hypoglycemia, patient undergoing surgery should discontinue use of the drug, during severe dehydration the drug should be discontinued, acute and chronic metabolic acidosis, and diabetic ketoacidosis.

Drug Interactions:
Drug interactions for Glucophage XR include: Glyburide, furosemide, nifedipine, cationic drugs like digoxin, morphine, ranitidine, and vancomycin.

The generic name of Glucophage XR is metformin hydrochloride. The active ingredient of Glucophage XR is metformin hydrochloride. The inactive ingredients of Glucophage XR are providone , sodium carboxymethyl cellulose, hypromellose, and magnesium stearate. GLUCOPHAGE XR consists of 500 mg or 750 mg of metformin hydrochloride as the active ingredient. GLUCOPHAGE XR 500 mg tablets consist the inactive ingredients sodium carboxymethyl cellulose, hypromellose, microcrystalline cellulose, and magnesium stearate. GLUCOPHAGE XR 750 mg tablets contain the inactive ingredients sodium carboxymethyl cellulose, hypromellose, and magnesium stearate.
