Common Uses:
Solodyn is a tetracycline class antibiotic medicine that contains minocycline. It fights bacteria in the body.
Solodyn is primarly used for the treatment of pimples and red bumps (non-nodular inflammatory lesions) that happen with moderate to severe acne in patients 12 years and older. It does not demonstrate any effect on non-inflammatory lesions.
Off Label Uses:
Currently there are no known off label uses for Solodyn.
Side Effects:
The side effects of Solodyn are nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, lightheadedness, dizziness, unsteadiness, drowsiness, mild headache, mouth sores, or cough may occur. If any of these effects persist or worsen, notify your doctor or pharmacist promptly.
Tell your doctor immediately if any of these unlikely but serious side effects occur: sunburn, muscle pain, difficult/painful swallowing, change in the amount of urine, pink urine, brown/gray tooth discoloration, blue/gray/brown discoloration of the skin/lips/tongue/gums, numbness/tingling of the hands/feet, unusual tiredness, new signs of infection.
Tell your doctor immediately if any of these rare but very serious side effects occur: hearing changes, easy bruising/bleeding, unusual/severe headache, vision changes.
Solodyn may rarely cause a severe intestinal condition (pseudomembranous colitis) due to a type of resistant bacteria. This condition may occur during treatment or weeks to months after treatment has stopped. Do not use anti-diarrhea products or narcotic pain medications if you have any of the following symptoms because these products may make them worse. Tell your doctor immediately if you develop: persistent diarrhea, abdominal or stomach pain/cramping, blood/mucus in your stool.
Use of this medication for prolonged or repeated periods may result in oral thrush or a new vaginal yeast infection (fungal infections). Contact your doctor if you notice white patches in your mouth, a change in vaginal discharge, or other new symptoms.
A very serious allergic reaction to this drug is rare. However, seek immediate medical attention if you notice any of the following symptoms of a serious allergic reaction: rash, skin lesions/sores, itching/swelling (especially of the face/tongue/throat), severe dizziness, trouble breathing, new or worsening swelling/pain in the joints, swollen glands, chest pain, fast/irregular heartbeat, severe stomach/abdominal pain, yellowing eyes/skin, dark urine.
Cautions / Warnings:
Cautions and/or warnings for Solodyn include the following:
Antibiotic medicines can cause diarrhea, which may be a sign of a new infection. If you have diarrhea that is watery or has blood in it, call your doctor. Do not use any medicine to stop the diarrhea unless your doctor has told you to.
Avoid exposure to sunlight or artificial UV rays (sunlamps or tanning beds). Solodyn can make your skin more sensitive to sunlight and sunburn may result. Use a sunscreen (minimum SPF 15) and wear protective clothing if you must be out in the sun. Do not take iron supplements, multivitamins, calcium supplements, antacids, or laxatives within 2 hours before or after taking Solodyn. These products can make minocycline less effective.
Drug Interactions:
Before taking Solodyn, it is important to inform your doctor if you are taking any of the following drugs:
cholesterol-lowering medications such as cholestyramine (Prevalite, Questran) or colestipol (Colestid);
isotretinoin (Accutane);
tretinoin (Renova, Retin-A, Vesanoid);
an antacid such as Tums, Rolaids, Milk of Magnesia, Maalox, and others;
a product that contains bismuth subsalicylate such as Pepto-Bismol;
minerals such as iron, zinc, calcium, magnesium, and over-the-counter vitamin and mineral supplements;
a blood thinner such as warfarin (Coumadin); or
a penicillin antibiotic such as amoxicillin (Amoxil, Trimox, others), penicillin (BeePen-VK, Pen-Vee K, Veetids, others), dicloxacillin (Dynapen), carbenicillin (Geocillin), oxacillin (Bactocill), and others.
In addition to the above, it is advsiable to inform your doctor regarding all prescription and over-the-counter medications you use. This includes vitamins, minerals, herbal products, and drugs prescribed by other doctors. Do not start using Solodyn without informing your doctor.

My son took solodyn on and off for two years. I would advise anyone experiencing any side effects to solodyn to stop taking it immediately. We just now linked the "issues" he was having over the past two years to solodyn. When we would go to the doctor about symtptoms he was not taking the medicine. He basically had the following side effects but never at the same time and we did not kink it to the med at the time. Joint pain, hives, swelling, fatigue, acid reflux, mouth sores, elevated liver enzymes, foggy feeling, tooth discoloration only on two teeth- In an effort to figure out why his liver enzymes were elevated we found a tumor in his kidney. Not sure if it is connected. Urologist at cancer center asked us to report it to FDA just in case. His tumor is benign but he may still lose the kidney. We will deal with the acne. No more meds of any type, it is just not worth it. He is an outstanding athlete on scholarship and almost missed starting his freshman year in college because of this.

Solodyn has been and still is terrible to me the last two weeks. I only took it 3weeks. I was not taking any other meds. No one could tell me why i was sick. 3 different doctors so many test. fever,chills,sweats,enlarged liver,fatigue, not eating, terrible itchy rashes. Did not think it was the solodyn at first because i believed i would have had a reaction to the first week of taking it. I just found out two days ago that it is the solodyn. I have been off of it 2 weeks now but this allergic reaction is not under control. My face and skin look terrible. Trying to treat mild acne has made my face 20x worse. I have a rash all over my face and now has spread all over my body. I now have to take steroids to stop the reaction. I don't wish this on anyone. Meds affect people differently. Unfortunately Solodyn has and is hell for me. I stay in my room so no one see's me. Can not go outside currently due to the heat makes it worse. I know God will see me through this though. My issue may not happen to you or others but it is possible.

Overall, my experience with solodyn has been good. I've been taking it for almost 2 years, and it has cleared up my severe acne almost completely. Except for some nausea when drinking alcohol, I've had no symptoms that I can directly attribute to this drug. However, my PMS symptoms have gotten worse, and I get very depressed a week before my period. I don't recall my mood swings ever being this bad before I was taking solodyn, but I'm cautious to blame it on the drug.
