I was prescribed amitryptiline after a servere breakdown and agitated depression. It was due to stress at work, and my Doctor told me the drug would bring my neurotransmitters together, that the stress had knocked apart. It saved my life, as I was suicidal. Well of course I stopped taking it, it almost killed me, if I wasn't actually dead for short periods. I was in total paralysis, having hallucinations that the walls were aglow with fire, and thinking that the toxic fumes from the (Non-existant) fire were keeping me from being able to move.Thinking that if I could only force myself to move I might snap out of it and escape, but I couldn't.Then the voices started, telling me I was already dead and why should I fight it anymore?Horrible, lasting... I have struggled with frequent bouts of insomnia since high schools. I've tried almost every prescription sleep aid on the market with less than positive results. They often left me feeling exhausted, had vivid, violent dreams, and overslept numerous times. Melatonin has been a life-saver. I take the 5 mg pill a half hour before bed and I sleep pretty well; almost the whole night through.
