Common Uses:
Doryx Delayed-Release Capsules is used for: Treating certain bacterial infections. It may be used in combination with other medicines to treat acne or certain amoeba infections. It may be used to prevent certain types of malaria in travelers who will be visiting malaria-infected areas for less than 4 months. It may also be used to prevent or slow the progression of anthrax after exposure.
Doryx Delayed-Release Capsules is a tetracycline antibiotic. It works by slowing the growth of bacteria. Slowing the bacteria's growth allows the body's immune system to destroy the bacteria.
Off Label Uses:
The off label uses of Doryx are:
Traveller's diarrhea
Pleural effusion
Side Effects:
Check with your doctor if any of these most common side effects persist or become bothersome when using Doryx Delayed-Release Capsules:
Loss of appetite; nausea; sensitivity to sunlight; vomiting.
Seek medical attention right away if any of these SEVERE side effects occur when using Doryx Delayed-Release Capsules:
Severe allergic reactions (rash; hives; itching; difficulty breathing; tightness in the chest; swelling of the mouth, face, lips, or tongue; unusual hoarseness); bloody stools; chest pain; dark urine; decreased urination; fever, chills, or sore throat; moderate to severe sunburn; severe diarrhea; severe or persistent headache; stomach pain or cramps; throat irritation; trouble swallowing; unusual bruising or bleeding; unusual joint pain; unusual tiredness; vaginal irritation or discharge; vision changes; yellowing of the skin or eyes.
Cautions / Warnings:
Precautions and warnings to be aware of prior to taking Doryx drug include the following:
To avoid damage to the esophagus while taking Doryx, ensure that you take the medication with plenty of fluids. Do not take this medication while you are sleeping or resting, and do not lie down immediately after taking your dose. These measures are necessary to make sure that the Doryx tablet does not accidentally stick in your throat, where it could cause significant irritation and damage.
Taking Doryx during pregnancy or before the age of 8 may cause the permanent discoloration of teeth in the infant or child.
Doryx is considered a pregnancy Category D medicine. This means that there is significant risk to an unborn baby. If you are pregnant, discuss these risks with your healthcare provider before using Doryx (see Doxycycline and Pregnancy for more information). In some rare situations, it may be appropriate for a pregnant woman to take this medication.
Many antibiotics have been known to cause pseudomembranous colitis (severe diarrhea). This is a serious condition that may potentially be fatal. If you experience severe, bloody, or prolonged diarrhea, contact your healthcare provider immediately.
Doryx can interact with certain medications (see Doryx Drug Interactions).
If you have kidney disease or severe liver disease, your healthcare provider may choose to give you a lower dose than normal or not prescribe Doryx at all.
If you are breastfeeding, it is known that Doryx passes through breast milk. Therefore, if you are breastfeeding, be sure to check with your healthcare provider before taking Doryx (see Doxycycline and Breastfeeding).
While taking antibiotics such as Doryx, other infections (such as vaginal yeast infections) have been known to occur. If you notice symptoms unrelated to your original condition, talk to your healthcare provider.
Antibiotics have been known to cause increased pressure in the skull. This usually stops when the antibiotic is discontinued. Make sure to talk to your healthcare provider if you experience any of the following symptoms while taking Doryx:
Headaches
Blurred vision
Nausea
Vomiting
Dizziness.
Skin reactions that resemble serious sunburns may occur if you are exposed to sunlight while taking Doryx. Try to avoid unnecessary sunlight exposure while taking this antibiotic. If sunlight exposure is unavoidable, cover as much of your skin as possible (long sleeves, long pants, or a hat), and use a sunscreen with a rating of SPF 45 or higher.
Drug Interactions:
Drug Interactions of Doryx include the following:
Anticoagulant Drugs
Because tetracyclines have been shown to depress plasma prothrombin activity, patients who are on anticoagulant therapy may require downward adjustment of their anticoagulant dosage.
Penicillin
Since bacteriostatic drugs may interfere with the bactericidal action of penicillin, it is advisable to avoid giving tetracyclines in conjunction with penicillin.
Antacids and Iron Preparations
Absorption of tetracyclines is impaired by antacids containing aluminum, calcium, or magnesium, bismuth subsalicylate, and iron-containing preparations.
Oral Contraceptives
Concurrent use of tetracycline may render oral contraceptives less effective.
Barbiturates and anti-epileptics
Barbiturates, carbamazepine, and phenytoin decrease the half-life of doxycycline.
Penthrane
The concurrent use of tetracycline and Penthrane®(methoxyflurane) has been reported to result in fatal renal toxicity.
Drug/Laboratory Test Interactions
False elevations of urinary catecholamines may occur due to interference with the fluorescence test.

Try adding more purple to your diet!
Purple foods such as concord grapes, blueberries, plums, pomegranates, acai berries, red wine, and even eggplants are very high in antioxidants. Purple foods have been shown to protect your heart and vision, promote mental focus, and increase longevity. Research has indicated that purple foods may even be used to prevent or cure cancer.

Doryx Comments
19 Jul 2009
I found that I am very sensitive to sunlight, much more so than with regular Doxycycline, and need to use sunblock. When I first started taking it, I was out in the sun all day and applying 55 sunblock periodically, and the next day started itching where the sunlight had hit. The following days, it became red and then rather scaley.

I wish there was an alternative to this medication that worked as well. The yeast infections are unbearable, and the interaction with birth control (making it uneffective) is annoying.
