Causes
The exact cause remains unknown to experts, but there are several factors that are linked to hypertension. Family history, aging, daily consumption of alcohol, eating lots of salt (sodium), obesity, high cholesterol, lack of physical exercise, stress, lack of potassium, magnesium, and calcium in a diet, and being insulin resistant. Prevention
Maintain healthy body mass index (BMI), decrease salt intake, get at least 3 hours of exercise per week, quitting smoking, reduce alcohol consumption, and eat more fruits, vegetables, and low-fat dairy products and eat less saturated fats.
Common Symptoms
Most people with primary hypertension do not have any symptoms. Blood pressure of 160/100 or higher can lead to hypertensive crisis, which must be treated immediatedly. Severe high blood pressure can cause headaches between the eyes, visual disturbances, nausea, vomiting, chest pain, and short sleep duration.
Rare Symptoms
Untreated, hypertension can cause heart attack or failure, stroke, kidney failure, peripheral artery disease, abnormal heartbeat, and eye damage.
Traditional Treatment
Treatment depends on severity of the condition and presence of other health problems. Suggested first are changes in lifestyle that include losing weight, eating less salt, exercising more, and quitting smoking. Prescriptions like ACE inhibitors, diuretics, beta blockers, ARBs, calcium channel blockers, direct renin inhibitors, and vasodilators may be added to control hypertension.
Alternative Treatment
Acupuncture, biofeedback, stress management, yoga, hypnosis, meditation, fish oil, soy products, potassium, calcium, and magnesium.
