Causes

While the exact cause of gout is unknown, there are several reasons that could lead to gout and they are:
• Defective genes that are responsible for metabolism; can lead to an excess production of uric acid and also retention of the same; leading to gout.

• Weight reduction program in case of patients that are obese or overweight;
• Avoid or curtail purine-rich diet;
• Stop alcohol consumption;

Traditional Treatment

Medications include nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs or NSAIDs to provide relief from pain; colchicine, corticosteroid drugs, and/or adrenocorticotropic hormone (ACTH); probenecid (Benemid, Parbenem or Probalan); sulfinpyrazone (Anturane); or allopurinol (Lopurin, Zurinol or Zyloprim). Another form of gout known as tophi could be treated with probenecid, sulfinpyrazone and allopurinol.
