Common Uses:
Vytorin (ezetimibe/simvastatin) is a prescription medication that has been licensed to treat several conditions. These uses for Vytorin include:
Treatment of hyperlipidemia, including:
High total cholesterol
High LDL cholesterol ("bad" cholesterol)
High triglycerides
High apo B cholesterol (another "bad" cholesterol)
Low HDL cholesterol ("good" cholesterol)
Treatment of heterozygous or homozygous familial hypercholesterolemia (a genetic form of high cholesterol).
Off Label Uses:
At this time, there are no universally accepted off-label uses for Vytorin.
Side Effects:
The side effects of Vytorin include upper respiratory infections, weakness, and increased liver enzymes. While most side effects are minor, if you experience unexplained muscle pain, tenderness, or weakness with a fever, contact your healthcare provider immediately, it could be a sign of a serious problem. Other potential side effects that may require attention include trouble breathing, passing dark-colored urine, and unexplained rash.
Cautions / Warnings:
Some precautions and warnings to be aware of with Vytorin include the following:
Vytorin can interact with certain medications.
If you are an alcoholic or drink alcohol frequently, discuss this with your healthcare provider prior to starting Vytorin. Alcohol can affect the way the liver works, indirectly affecting the effects of Vytorin.
Statins have been known to cause an increase in liver enzymes. Therefore, it is recommended that you have a blood test to check your liver function before starting Vytorin and then again several months after treatment has started. These tests may also be recommended if the Vytorin dosage is changed.
Rhabdomyolysis (the severe breakdown of muscles) and other serious muscle problems have rarely been reported with Vytorin and other statins. Contact your healthcare provider immediately if you experience any muscle pain, weakness, or tenderness, especially if accompanied by body aches or a fever.
Vytorin is a pregnancy Category X medicine, meaning that the drug could potentially cause harm to your unborn child. The safety of Vytorin in pregnant women has not been established. Therefore, if you become pregnant while taking Vytorin, talk to your healthcare provider immediately.
If you are nursing, it is not known whether Vytorin passes through your milk. Therefore, if you are taking Vytorin, ask your healthcare provider whether to stop nursing or to discontinue your Vytorin.

Try adding more purple to your diet!
Purple foods such as concord grapes, blueberries, plums, pomegranates, acai berries, red wine, and even eggplants are very high in antioxidants. Purple foods have been shown to protect your heart and vision, promote mental focus, and increase longevity. Research has indicated that purple foods may even be used to prevent or cure cancer.

Vytorin Comments
12 Sep 2016
Didn't realize that Vytorin was causing skin or memory problems until I stopped. Skin & memory improved. At first attributed skin improvement to coconut oil which I started using about the time I quit Vytorin, but as soon as I re-stared Vytorin my skin got bad again as well as memory problems.

More About This Treatment
About Vytorin
Vytorin (ezetimibe/simvastatin) is a prescription medication used for high cholesterol and high triglycerides. It is a combination of two medicines: ezetimibe (Zetia), which is a cholesterol absorption inhibitor, and simvastatin (Zocor), which is part of a class of drugs called HMG-CoA reductase inhibitors (more commonly known as a statin). Vytorin is manufactured by Merck/Schering-Plough Pharmaceuticals (MSP). As mentioned, Vytorin is a combination of simvastatin and ezetimibe. Simvastatin works by blocking a particular enzyme (HMG-CoA reductase) that controls the rate of cholesterol production in the body. This causes the liver to make less cholesterol and also increases the liver's ability to collect and get rid of LDL cholesterol ("bad" cholesterol). Ezetimibe is part of a class of drugs called cholesterol absorption inhibitors. As the name implies, it blocks the absorption of cholesterol from the intestines into the blood. By doing this, less cholesterol enters the body. The drug is unique in that it works just at the "brush border" of the small intestine. Because less cholesterol is delivered from the digestive tract to the liver (which depletes its stores of cholesterol), the liver reacts by taking cholesterol from the blood, which reduces cholesterol levels. Because of the effects of simvastatin and ezetimibe, Vytorin decreases the following forms of cholesterol and fats: Total cholesterol LDL cholesterol Triglycerides. The medication also increases HDL cholesterol ("good" cholesterol).
